Why? So you can type better on the iPhone keyboard!

.....

Just kidding. Although some sources ran this story as true over the weekend. Even in the days of the internets, you just can't believe everything you read, even at trusted sources.

What's really funny is that so many of the commenters @ Engadget seemed to have believed it.

Personally, I have no real issues with typing on the keyboard other than that the spell checker gets annoying in some cases. When I'm typing an email or a note it's usually fine. I have to watch for it changing "FOR" to "GOT" but it's really solid for the most part. When typing things that aren't real words or sentances it becomes a pain... never do the size of thumbs enter into the minor frustration, however.

What do you think of the typing?

iPhone Update: Version 1.0.1 is here! I personally remember trying to replace windows desktop icons back in the day and it was a huge waste of time and would just slow my system down.

See the original post at: http://thinkabdul.com/2007/01/13/apple-iphone-themed-iconstoday-skin-for-windows-mobile-pocket-pc/

iPhone Rumors: Major iPhone Updates coming?

I haven't posted this yet - well because I believed that Apple would come out with a real update list but that just hasn't happened. The post (which you can find everywhere, so I'm not sure who to credit) starts off like the typical 'My friend of a friend's brother's dog met with a guy from Apple and he said...' so it really comes off as BS until you start reading the list.

It's all not only feasible but well, it's pretty 'no duh'. I mean with the coming release of Leopard and the things that other phones can do that the iPhone can't - it's really only a matter of time before this list is implemented. None of it would require a hardware update and all of it would make the naysayers into iPhone converts I think.

Here's some highlights:

-File Browser (like Leopard)
-Custom Ringtones
-Widescreen Keyboard in allApplications
-Flash for Safari
-Copy,Paste and Select Text

There's a lot more - read the whole post at: http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1191647&highlight=met+buddy+Apple+Coffee+today

iPhone Hack: Safari Exploit - Hackers Attack!

Using a script embedded in an HTML file could allow for remote access to well, almost every peice of information on your phone. Email, passwords, sms messages, etc.

Independent Security Evaluators (ISE) claims they were able to remotely access an iPhone through a script they developed. This essentially gives an attacker an all access pass to your information. Once the script is activated through the Sarafi web browser the iPhone willingly ends your information over the connection. This only works on Wi-Fi connections and again is, as far I have read only something this company is claiming.

This isn't something someone can just do... I heard about this through the rumor mill and my friend was like "OMG, you have the iPhone, now hackers can control your life!". Simply not the case. You still have to be the one visiting the site in the first place. You could be tricked into going, you could get an email that had a link that took you there... you could but it's not likely you will.

By now a lot of us are used to the usual list of what not to do:

1. Don't open emails from people you don't know
2. Don't click on links you are unsure about from emails or websites
3. Don't visit shady websites. You know what I'm talking about... the ones with all the pop-ups and questionable material!
4. If you must look at questionable material, visit KNOWN reliable sites
5. Change your important passwords often
6. Only use Wi-Fi networks you trust

The last one is harder - I've been getting used to trolling NYC hopping on all sorts of unprotected wireless networks. There are just so many to choose from!

I personally feel that this is a bit of media hype meant to bring attention to the company releasing the video below and the hack in the first place. Since the iPhone's release it's been a "Who can hack it first" race. These guys will enjoy their 15 mins off this and that will be that... an update will be released and we'll move on to the next vulnerability.

Also take comfort in the fact that there are hundreds of iPhones most of which probably have nothing really that useful on them. I mean what is a hacker gonna do with my yahoo account? Email my mom?

iPhone Disassembled: They Did it So You Don't Have To

Curiouse about what's on the inside of your little iPhone? ifixit.com has taken theirs apart, step by step going over the hardware.

For anyone wanting to know how - this is a pretty exhausting guide with pics.

Check it out here!

iPhone Solutions: iPhone Outlook Calendar Synch Problems

I'm currently one of many people having problems synching my outlook calendar to my iPhone. In search of answers, I found a few that may be helpful to you...

The easiest and #1 thing to make sure of is that you have the current version of iTunes. That would be version 7.3.1. That version apparently contains an iPhone calendar sync fix.

Another fix if just updating iTunes fails, is to restore the iPhone and try again. Restoring though iTunes apparently retains all your information (except for the music and videos).

That and many other solutions I read about have failed to fix my problem so I'm hoping iTunes 7.3.2 will ~ in the meantime head over to http://www.everythingiphone.com and check out this forum about the calendar sync problem.... it may contain something that will work for you.

Also, please feel free to share any fixes or comments you may have on the issue~

iPhone Rumors: Nintendo Games coming to the iPhone?

It's rumored that Apple and Nintendo are going to join forces and release Nintendo games for the new iPhone. According to the rumor, they will be available for download from the iTunes store and will carry a cost of $29.99 each.

If the lack of buttons was a development problem solved by adding an on screen D-PAD then as much as I'm intrigued by this I can't help but think that it will detract from game play. Imagine the large D-PAD and corresponding buttons taking up any amount of screen space on the already small screen. Leave it to Apple and Nintendo though and I'm sure they'll make it work in a way we haven't thought of... my best guess is translucent overlayed buttons but I write blogs, I do not design high tech gizmos.

I personally don't know if I'd pay that much just to re-live me some Super Mario Brothers action on my iPhone. I thought $5.00 was too much when I was downloading games from Sprint to my old Razr. We all want to know "When?!"

Some popular answers from the media have been "2 years" or "400 charge cycles". "What the fruk is a charge cycle?" you ask yourself, imagining that on that 400th death your phone will just refuse to awaken ever again.

Thanks to a recent MacWorld article - this is simply not the case.

The real story from Apple is that the iPhone only starts to lose capacity after 300-400 charge cycles (about 20%). A charge cycle is defined as a full charge - from a dead battery to a full charge. This does not include plugging it in for a bit at work or home. It does not mean every time you chage the phone.

“If you top (the charge) off, you’re not wasting a charge cycle,” Greg Joswiak said.

This is much better news and a much needed clarity. At 400 charges to death, your iPhone would be dead within a year.

By the time you'll have to worry about your battery replacement, I'm sure you'll be too busy mulling over dropping another $600 on iPhone 2.0.

Read the original article at MacWorld!

iPhone Video: If you can't Hack it... It's all about your ADDRESS...

So I buy the iPhone. I waited a few weeks and waited for the chance to play with a friends and I got that chance yesterday. Last night I was at the Apple Store, credit card in hand.

It's a great device but activation can be a HUGE headache. Seems that the developers simply ignored the fact that people may have out of state cell phone numbers. For example, my friend is from Georgia and his cell was too. He's in NYC now but has never changed his cell phone number. Why should he? It works fine. My own phone is from LA with an 818 area code (more on that later).

He had no problem activating his service because he didn't use a NY address when he did it.

I tried to activate my phone this morning for a few hours - and all my trouble was due to the fact that I wanted to have my 818 phone number and a New York billing address. After multiple activation attempts, 2 trips to an AT&T store and calls to AT&T I found that I was much better off activating with my old Los Angeles address.

Thankfully I still have that apt in my name and I can get the mail there.

The simple answer here is this: ACTIVATION will only go smoothly if you have an address that matches both your iTunes account (if you already had one) and the AREA CODE of your phone.

AT&T actually suggested that I activate with a new number and transfer my number later... they don't realize that the problem is in the address area code conflict so calling them will be virtually useless.

If you have a preapproved credit code - that code and process must also have been done with the correct address.

Here's a link with some helpful and similar information but they don't have it all.

Here's how to handle activation smoothly, step by step (from my experience):

1. Ensure that any addresses you are going to use for this are the same and that they match the area code of the phone number you are transferring.

2. It seemed to help to have a preapproved credit number from an AT&T store. But keep this in mind: They won't do it over the phone and the pre-approval has to be run with the right address and as if you were in that area when you ran it.

A plus to this is that you will know before you buy the phone if you'll have to pay a ridiculous credit deposit. ($150 - $1000!)

3. When you enter your phone number, account number and zip code, make sure the zip code is in the same area as the area code of the phone. You won't get far at all if it's not. The program will tell you the phone number cannot be transferred which is not true.

After the activation, AT&T assured me that I could easily change my billing address to a NY address with no problem. I'm waiting until the activation is complete and a few weeks have gone by just to be on the safe side.

Apparently a lot of people are running into this issue which is no surprise, most of the people I know have out of state phone numbers.

Very crappy oversight on someone's part!

What has your experience been?
